This Byzantine Bethany Lamp is small palm sized biblical clay lamp replica. It is an example of those used during early Christianity. This style was used in Christian as well as Jewish homes from about 400 AD to 500 AD in the Holy Land. This lamp is intended to be used with vegetable oils, preferably olive oil. The early Christians would have used olive oil for fuel. Each lamp was made in Israel just as it was during the time of the New Testament Bible. Approximate size is 3.50 inch by 2.0 by 1 inch. Though small, it still gives off the same amount of light as a candle.
While Moslems, Jews, Christians and other faiths lived in Judea during this time period, some scholars believe that the marks on this lamp are symbolic palm branches, an early Christian symbol. This would mean then that this original lamp was owned by a Christian.
2 wicks are included with the purchase of the lamp but any unbleached cotton fiber may be used. The lamp burns for a few hours with each filling.
Some suggested uses are: Sunday school teaching, Church demonstrations, special religious ceremonies or anywhere you would like to recreate the lighting used by the early Christians.
An acrylic stand may also be purchased with this lamp for display purposes.
