This wooden icon of the Virgin of Pachaev (Pochev) and the Christ Child comes from the Ukraine. The history of this icon of Our Lady of Pochaev beings in 1198, only about two centuries after Christianity came to the Ukraine. In this year a monk ascended Mount Pochaev in order to pray and a pillar of fire appeared both to him and a group of shepherds. The flames retreated and there was the Virgin Mary. After the apparition disappeared, a footprint was left behind from which sprang a flow of water.
The size is 2 1/2 inches by 3 inches and is imported from Russia. The images are high quality offset print with golden paint ornaments printed over wood. In Russia, the sacred icons are not hung but placed on a shelf on the right side of the room as you enter. If you prefer to hang the icon as a painting, there is a mount on the back.
